A Visitor On Europe’s Roads

On the road again

The shows on this trip are around weekends so after a couple of days break we are on the road again. This time it’s a 4 hour drive south to Bad Essen for a house concert.

Driving today was a little harder than when we drove north last Sunday. Today there are hundreds if not thousands of trucks on the road. They are not allowed to drive on a Sunday. Most of today is motorway driving. Many road works unfortunately which slows us down.

The main roads, ie not motorways, are very nice to drive on. Almost no potholes anywhere!! You need to be aware that the speed limit when you enter a village or town is 50kph. There is no speed limit sign for this. You have to know. So driving through the flat countryside had its ups and downs. Often only a few k between villages so it’s up to 70 then down to 50 then up to 70 then down to 50 …

Of course on most of the motorways there is no speed limit. We cruise at 120 to 140 (75 to 87 mph) then get overtaken as if we are going slowly.

Most of the main roads between villages and towns also have a cycle path along one side with a wide verge between it and the road. We see  many cyclists and a few walkers.

Tonight’s house concert is in Barkhausen near Bad Essen. It’s the 10th house concert Rolf and Christina have held over the last 5 years. Their room is full with (just) 28 people which makes it very nice. They were a very enthusiastic audience and really liked Ray playing cello so he added a couple of extra songs that he had not played for a while – Destroying Angel and 7 Curses. They gave him two encores, firstly Tears of Isis and then by special request Drunk On Summer.
