A Visitor On Europe’s Roads

St Johannis Kloster

Today was a mere 40 minute drive down to Schleswig. The town is on one side of a small bay at the end of an inlet from the Baltic. Between the ninth and eleventh centuries there was a very important Viking trading settlement on the other side of the bay.

The concert is in the chapel of the monastery (Kloster). It dates back to the twelfth century.

This was an acoustic concert and Ray was able to play the chapel harmonium.

The acoustics in this old chapel were so lovely that Ray adjusted his second set to introduce some songs he has not been playing recently: Ye Jacobites By Name, Border Widows Lament, and Macphersons Rant with Sir Patrick Spens fitting in nicely with both the natural sound of the venue and the theme of Scottish ballads with two songs taken from Minstrelsy Of The Scottish Border, edited by Walter Scott and first published in 1802. The audience gave Ray a standing ovation both at the end of his set and also after the first encore (The Puritan) so of course there was a second encore (My Compass Points To North)
